How to Install an eBike Conversion Kit: 9 Easy Steps

Quick answer: Most people fit an AMPX kit at home in 1 to 3 hours using basic tools, and doing it yourself keeps your warranty valid.

Haven't bought your kit yet? It's worth checking that your bike will fit first.

What's in the box

Inside you'll find the motor wheel, controller and bag, screen, throttle, pedal sensor, brake levers, torque arms, plug adapters and a manual. Your battery arrives separately in its own box.

What you'll need

  • Allen keys, a spanner and a screwdriver
  • Tyre levers and a pump
  • Cable ties (we include some in the box)
  • A friend to help, if you can, as it makes things much easier

9 easy steps

  1. Take off your back wheel. Shift into the smallest gear first, then open the quick release and drop the wheel out.
  2. Get the motor wheel ready. Move your tyre and tube across to the motor wheel, then screw on gears (called a freewheel) with the same number of speeds as your bike, such as 8-speed.
  3. Put the motor wheel in. Slide the axle into the slots with the motor cable pointing down.
  4. Fit the torque arms. Put one on each side and tighten the nuts firmly, as they stop the axle from spinning in the frame. Please never ride without them.
  5. Strap on the controller. The controller is the brain of your e-bike, so pop it in its bag somewhere it gets some air and won't bump your legs, like under the top tube.
  6. Fit the handlebar parts. The screen goes near the middle of the bars and the throttle goes on the right grip. The brake levers are optional, so you're welcome to keep your own brakes.
  7. Fit the pedal sensor. The magnet disc goes behind the crank, and the sensor sits on the frame a few millimetres away from the magnets.
  8. Plug everything in, with the battery unplugged. The manual shows which plug goes where. Once it's all connected, tidy the cables with cable ties and keep them away from the chain and brake disc.
  9. Connect the battery. Match red to red and black to black, and take your time here, because mixing them up can damage the controller and isn't covered by warranty.

Your first ride

  • Lift the back wheel off the ground and gently twist the throttle to check it spins.
  • Take a slow ride somewhere safe and open before you try full power.
  • After your first few rides, check that the axle nuts are still nice and tight.
  • If you'd like a lower top speed, both screens have a speed limiter, and our FAQ shows you how to set it.

Something not working?

Problem Try this
Nothing turns on Check the battery is charged and switched on, and push every plug in all the way.
Throttle works but pedal assist doesn't Move the sensor a little closer to the magnets, or flip the magnet disc around.
Brake disc rubs Add a small spacer behind the disc. About 3mm fixes most 3000W kits.
Wheel isn't straight Push the axle fully into both slots and check the torque arms are sitting flat.

Will fitting it myself void my warranty?

Not at all, and you don't need a mechanic or workshop receipt either. The only thing that isn't covered is damage caused by a wrong install, like mixed-up battery wires or pinched cables, but even then we can send you spare parts.

Common questions

Do I need to take it to a bike shop?
No, you can do it all at home. If you'd feel more confident with some help, a local bike mechanic can lend a hand.

Can I ride without gears?
Yes, and plenty of our 3000W and 5000W riders take the chain off completely and just use the throttle.

Is it waterproof?
It's water resistant rather than waterproof, so riding in light rain is fine. Just avoid hosing it down or riding through deep water.

Kits over 250W are for off-road and private property use only.
